Butterfly Bush - Nanho Blue

Nanho Blue does not require much watering once it is established. It is crown hardy in zone 5, a good cut flower, and attracts butterflies. Butterfly bushes prefer full sun and must receive eight or more hours of sun a day to thrive and get the best blooms. Tiny individual flowers are produced in profusion in long, dense trusses. In northern areas it dies back in winter, so trim to 6-10" in spring. A rapid growing multi-stem plant, Nanho Blue has large mauve-blue flowers that grow from July-Sept. Nanho Blue Butterfly Bush, Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Blue', is often called the "Summer Lilac". It is easily maintained at four to six feet in height, and five feet wide, if it is hard-pruned annually. It is more compactly leafed than most Butterfly Bush varieties. Cut faded flowers off of bush regularly to keep it blooming throughout the summer. ... more

Sweetshrub The Sweetshrub, Calycanthus floridus, or Carolina allspice is a dense, rounded deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which grows 6-9' tall with an equal or slightly greater spread. Prune immediately after flowering to shape or maintain compactness. Leaves are aromatic when bruised. Flowers give way to brownish, urn-shaped fruits (seed capsules) which mature in fall and persist throughout the winter. Use as a specimen near front door, patio or other living areas where the fragrant flower aroma may be enjoyed.
