Carrot - Babette
The single most important factor in growing carrots is to have a deep, clod and rock free, well drained soil. Even moisture is essential. Babette is a 4 inch long carrot with a smooth and cylindrical and very uniform shape with a deep orange color even before maturity. Carrot seed germinates in soils as cold as 45 degrees, but performs best in warm soils. Did you know that grocery store carrots are actually cored regular carrots? Once you try the sweet and crisp flavor of this "true" baby carrot, you will never look back. The first sowing should be 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost. In very warm climates carrots are grown primarily in the fall. The foliage is very strong and will not break off when pulling it up. Do successive planting every 3 weeks until 70 days before the first fall frost. The Carrot Baby Babette, 'Daucus carota var staivus', is a gourmet mini-carrot that was bred in France. Shiso Perilla - Green aoshiso Mix or sprinkle over cucumbers, cabbage, fish, soups, rice, and potato dishes. The Shiso Perilla Green (Aoshiso), 'Perella frutescens', is an intoxicating, flavorful herb that should be as popular as basil or cilantro. Herbalists claim Shiso has antibiotic qualities and is the one reason it is used with sushi. The Shiso is also an excellent container plant. The incredible flavor has been described as curry-like and a combination of cumin, cilantro, and parsley, with a hint of cinnamon. In salads, the leaves add a very unique flavor. Shiso Perilla have green leaves that resemble parsley except they have sharply serrated edges. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date.
