Carrot - Royal Chantenay

The single most important factor in growing carrots is to have a deep, clod and rock free, well drained soil. In very warm climates carrots are grown primarily in the fall. Royal Chantenay is considered an excellent all around carrot by combining excellent qualities such as flavor, shallow soil growth, and storage ability. The Carrot Royal Chantenay, 'Daucus carota var staivus', produces home grown carrots that taste better than store bought. A 50% peat moss mix with the soil is ideal. The first sowing should be 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost. They have a sweet, crisp, nice flavor and they are excellent for heavy, clay dominated soils. Carrot seed germinates in soils as cold as 45 degrees, but performs best in warm soils. They are a great container vegetable The Royal Chantenay produces a carrot that is thick, 5 to 6 inches long, and orange in color. Even moisture is essential. Squash - Winter - Pink Banana Harvest after first or second light frost. Plant in the spring, 2 to 4 weeks after the last average frost date. The Squash Winter Pink Banana, 'Cucurbita maxima', is an Heirloom introduced in 1893 and common in American Pioneer Gardens. The fiberless yellow-orange flesh is great for pies, baking, or canning. Winter squash cannot be overripe, but can be under ripe. The Pink Banana squash is also known as Mexican Banana and Plymouth Rock. These 18 to 24 inch long squash are 5 to 7 inches in diameter and with up to 10 pounds. The very smooth velvety skin make it attractive as well as tasty. They should be harvested when you can't dent the hard skin with your finger.
