Hardy Geraniums continue to gain popularity among gardeners who are looking for low-maintenance plants. It likes quite a bit of sun but will still bloom in partial shade. It can be used as a weed-smothering ground cover if there is no shrub bracing it upward. Not only do they produce lovely flowers in a wide variety of colors, but they also have varied growing habits to suit gardeners in almost any climate. But it is not heat-hardy and dislikes humid summers, so not very useful above Zone 8. It likes moist acidic humousy soil but will do pretty well with slightly drier conditions and poorer soil. The Hardy Geranium Patricia, 'Geranium x Patricia', displays vivid cyclamen red blooms. During the summer it produces eye-catching magenta flowers with star-shaped, dark-colored centers.
