Mache - Corn - Salad - Big Seeded

This plant is also known as Lambs Lettuce or Rapunzel. Light peanut flavored or light vinaigrette salad dressing is recommended. The leaves are so tender they "Melt" in your mouth. In warm climates, plant in the fall for winter harvest. The big-seeded variety handles the spring/summer heat without getting bitter which is great for north or south gardens. Mache can be planted in containers. Mache is a cool season annual. The Mache Corn Salad Big Seeded, 'Valerianella locusta', has the mildest flavor and softest texture of any salad green. In northern climate, plant in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked. The soil should be fertile, moist, and well drained. The dark green spoon-shaped leaves are gathered into a rosette. It combines nicely with fruits and vegetables and makes a really wonderful salad in and by itself. It is a very attractive plant in the garden. This vegetable grows to 1 inch in diameter, but it can be harvested at almost any size. Snow peas should be harvested before the seeds start to form. Plant in the early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Peas that are too mature will cause the plant to stop producing. The Pea Snow Oregon Sugar Pod ll, 'Pisum sativum', is a flat podded type pea that has great disease resistance and is tasty and stringless. Peas prefer well drained soil. Keep the plants moist but do get them over watered and soggy.
