Penstemon - Rocky Mountain Blue

Penstemon prefer full sun and light shade. The Penstemon Rocky Mountain Blue, 'Penstemon strictus', has elegant bluish purple spikes of tubular flowers that lend a touch of formality to the dry flower garden. Rocky Mountain Penstemon enhances the garden twelve months of the year. Rocky Mountain Blues start blooming during the first hot days of early summer and continue for several weeks. Plant in the spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date or in late fall. In winter, evergreen basal rosettes turn from green to reddish purple, shrugging temperatures well below zero. The Wild Arugula is also a good container plant. Arugula, when mature, grow to 2 to 3 feet tall, but the leaves are tastiest and less bitter when harvested 2 to 6 inches long. The flowers are also edible. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date and plant successive plantings thereafter every 3 weeks until first fall frost approaches. In warmer climates, delay planting during the heat of the summer.
