Silverbell
The seeds are eaten by squirrels and the flowers provide honey for bees. Place in full sun to partial shade. It has a moderate growth rate and lives about 100 years. The Carolina Silverbell tree, Halesia carolina, also known as Mountain Silverbell, Snowdrop tree, and Oppossum Wood, is common and reaches its greatest size in the southern Appalachian Mountains where it is called mountain silverbell. Fall color is chartreuse to yellow-brown. This attractive shrub, or small tree, grows in moist soils along streams in the understory of hardwood forests. This deciduous tree has soft wood and it is close-grained and a favorite wood for crafts. The white bell-shaped flowers and small size make it a desirable tree for landscaping. Balsam Fir The Balsam Fir, 'Abies balsamea', exhibits a relatively dense, dark-green, pyramidal crown with a slender spire-like tip. Balsam fir and Fraser fir have many similar characteristics. The scientific name "balsamea" is an ancient word for the balsam tree, so named because of the many resinous blisters found in the bark. A large percentage of Christmas trees are Balsam Firs. The species thrives in cooler climates and demands abundant soil moisture and a humid atmosphere. |
