Tomato - Rutgers Select
In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. The bright red fruits have a full-bodied flavor in an attractive old-time favorite. This is one of the best all purpose tomatoes grown. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering. This is a great canner and makes a great BLT too. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes should be planted outside after the last average frost date. The Tomato Rutgers Select, 'Lycopersicon lycopersicum', is an all-purpose variety that is ideal for canning. Rutgers Select produces medium round globe fruits with smooth firm flesh that is ideal for canning and slicing. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
