Successive plantings every 3 weeks until mid-summer can provide continuous greens. Purple top prefers well drained soil with lots of organic matter. The very tasty, sweet and mild roots are eaten fresh or cooked like potatoes. Greens can be harvested when young and tender. The greens are even more nutritious and are considered one of best flavors in the greens category. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost or when ground temperatures reach 45 degrees. Purple Top White Globes store particularly well. Bachelor Button - Sweet Sultan Flower colors are shades of white, pink, purple, lavender, rose, red, yellow, and burgundy. If you like cut flowers, you must grow Sweet Sultan. They prefer average soils with moderate fertility and are tolerant to drought. The Sweet Sultan is an excellent cut flower and grows well in that "hot" spot where nothing else does well. Sweet Sultan blooms summer into early fall, mostly during the heat. The easy to grow and very fragrant 'Imperialis' is a somewhat taller and improved variety. The Bachelor Button Sweet Sultan Imperialis, 'Centaurea (Amberboa) moschata', is a deliciously fragrant and an absolutely splendid cut flower. The 2 inch flower heads are thistle-looking and almost shine. Plant the Bachelor Buttons in the spring 1 to 2 weeks before the last frost. Sweet Sultans prefer a full sun location. |
